Level 3 · Lesson 5.2

The Right Stance at Both Ends, and a Direct Route Between

Start and finish every move in the stance the play needs, take the shortest path, and know when a low-to-high play calls for a curve instead.

Part of Lesson 5 · Advanced Movement. Moving like an advanced goalie: every push, slide and rotation starts and ends in the right stance for the situation and takes the most direct route, with your weight centered, your whole body arriving square, and your legs ready before the puck moves. It's the same order every time (look, rotate, load, push, stop square), started a little earlier and aimed at where the puck is going next.

Start and end in the appropriate stance. Every movement starts from a stance and finishes in one, but it doesn't have to be the same stance (Level 2, Lesson 6). A move might start in your high (reacting) stance with the puck far out and finish in your low (crowding) stance as the puck comes in close. It might start in RVH on the post and finish in your ready stance in the slot. Before you move, ask: what stance will I need when I get there? Arrive in that stance, set and square. The stop is part of the move: a great push that ends in the wrong stance, or with lingering movement, isn't a great push.
